There are several common problems with old wooden sash windows. It is not at all unusual for the wood to begin rotting. Quite frequently this is because the windows were built with inferior wood. It can also result from poor care and maintenance, improper painting, or moisture and mildew. Unfortunately this will often be unrepairable, and require complete replacement.
